FAQ
What type of counseling does L&L offer?
L&L counselors are trained in both counseling and theology. We provide care that is Biblically-based, Gospel-centered, and Clinically-informed. We are not licensed therapists in a particular state but trained biblical counselors.
How much do you charge?
Our billing rate is $110 for a 50 minute session.
Is anything required before my first session?
In advance of your first session, we will ask that you complete all intake paperwork and execute required disclosures. These documents can be downloaded from our website or may be completed electronically using the Forms link in our website's footer.
What basic presuppositions undergird L&L's counseling philosophy?
All therapeutic endeavors seek to answer life's most challenging questions: Who am I? Why am I struggling? Why do I feel this way? What is wrong with me? Why are my relationships crumbling? What is the point of it all? Why am I returning to this destructive substance?
At Lamp&Light, we approach these questions with biblical presuppositions, believing that God's word is intended to be a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. We encourage you to peruse our "Our Approach" and "Distinctives" pages to learn more.
What counseling issues does L&L address?
L&L counselors work on a wide range of issues with counselees. Whether you are steeped in a season of suffering, grief, sorrow, despair, weariness, relational conflict, guilt, shame, difficulty in your marriage, parenting, professional pursuits, sense of purpose, or struggling with destructive personal habits, we would consider it a privilege to walk alongside you. Based on your response to our intake form, we may suggest you work with a specific counselor who has more experience with the particulars of your life. We are also quick to refer to a counselor outside of Lamp&Light if we are not well equipped to work with you. Still wondering if this may be a good fit? Please do not hesitate to reach out.
Is L&L against medication?
No. At Lamp&Light we believe that we were perfectly and purposefully created as embodied souls. Our counsel keeps the limitations and suffering tied to our physical bodies in view. We believe medication can be a merciful gift that may help provide relief, stilling the stormy waters in a sufferer's life. We enthusiastically partner with and refer to medical professionals helping to diagnose, or manage specific diagnosis or medications as that is outside of the scope of the work we do.
Do you offer financial assistance?
If financial constraints are preventing you from seeking counseling services, as a start, we'd encourage you to connect with your church to request support in making counseling feasible. Many churches will offer to pay for a specific number of sessions or will split the cost of counseling. If helpful, we're able to directly bill churches who wish to subsidize the cost of counseling for their members.
We do offer a limited number of counseling sessions at a discounted rate if finances are the only obstacle to you seeking care.
Do I have to be a Christian?
In short, no! You do not have to be a Christian, but please note that our approach to counseling presupposes a worldview shaped by the biblical narrative. We understand ourselves and those we counsel through the Bible's story of creation, fall, redemption, and promised reconciliation.
Will you just read Bible verses to me?
No. While the Bible shapes our counsel, including what we prioritize, how we speak, why we listen, and what we say, and is the lens through which we see the world and understand the complexities of human suffering and struggles, we are not simply on a hunt to find a Bible verse to serve as a prescription to a particular problem.
Do you accept insurance?
No. The type of counseling we provide does not fit in the traditional insurance model. We do not file claims, and we are not paneled by any insurers. Many insurance companies will ask for an ICD-10 diagnosis code and treatment plan before providing reimbursement. We do not provide these services.
Does L&L offer remote counseling? How does that work?
Yes. Given our clients are located across the country, the vast majority of our counseling happens online. We provide a calendar invite when a meeting is scheduled that includes a link to join a virtual session via Google Meet. Simply click the Google Meet link, and you will enter the meeting. There are no specific software requirements. All you need is an internet connection.
Can I use my phone to attend a virtual counseling session?
We do have clients who log into sessions on their smart phones but highly recommend using a larger screen (like a laptop or desktop) instead. We periodically use whiteboards during virtual counseling sessions, and following along can be difficult on a tiny screen!
Do you have to live in a certain state to work with Lamp&Light?
Given we are not licensed with a particular state, L&L counselors are able to work with clients all over the world. We would consider it a privilege to walk alongside you in your current season. Use this link to connect with a counselor.
Do you work with children?
We do not currently work with children or adolescents. If you are looking for a counselor for a minor, please feel free to reach out and we can help provide a recommendation.
